OUR Methods

robust joints

The proverbial ‘glue’ that holds everything together - wherever 2 or more pieces meet, we prioritize strong, durable joints.

Whether you desire dovetails, box joints, mortise & tenon, or something else - we do it all. We make extensive use of both power and hand tools for these features.

Pictured end tables created in house, 2022. Sapele top; Honduran Mahogany legs. Thru-tenon legs; Bloodwood keys. Brush applied marine varnish.

beefy components

We take this part very seriously - your furniture will typically feature thicker cuts of lumber than necessary and will be constructed to withstand decades of use. Why do we do this? Because it makes better woodworking. And it greatly increases the piece’s lifespan. And… it looks spectacular.

Pictured exterior doors (2x, each 48” wide) created from 2” Sapele lumber. Milled, shaped, assembled, & finished in house. Frame & panel construction. 24 mortise & tenon joints. 4 coats of marine varnish (hand brushed / sanded). Doorway completed in 2021; ~96” W * 80” H.

exceptional finishwork

At Hardwood Alchemy, we take great pride in our finishing process. Whether it’s a rub-on or a brush applied finish (like varnish or shellac), we follow a thorough prep & finishing process for each piece we make.

After shaping & assembly are done, we prepare pieces to receive finish by performing a meticulous sanding of all surfaces.

We perform wood finishing as well as painting. Finishes are brush-applied and hand-sanded (3-4 coats, minimum). Painting performed with brush and sprayer.
